Easter
by DaySounds, 2016-18

During Holy Week, we celebrate Jesus' sacrifice on the cross for you and for me.
Easter Sunday is the celebration of his resurrection. Much has been said and written
about us not needing to do anything to be disciples of Jesus--except placing our faith
in him. However, Jesus himself said, "If anyone wants to be my disciple, let him deny
himself, take up his cross, and follow me." The apostle Paul, one of his early disciples,
wrote, "With Christ I am together crucified, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ
who lives in me," and "be imitators of me as I am of Christ."

If our lives are marked by a desire to achieve material possessions, power, social status,
or pleasure, we are not Jesus' disciples, even though we may proclaim that we are.
Our lives should be marked by our genuine love for God (above all), and for our neighbor
(as we love ourselves).

Jesus said that as a tree is known by its fruit, so it is a prophet--or someone claiming
Jesus to be his/her Lord : "Are grapes harvested from thorn bushes, or figs from thistles?"
"By their fruits you will know them." "Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord' will enter into the Kingdom of Heaven; but
he who does the will of my Father who is in Heaven. Many will say to me that day, 'Lord
Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out demons?
and in your name have done many miracles?' And then I will declare unto them, 'I never
knew you; depart from me you workers of iniquity.'"
The world sells the idea of happiness and fulfillment as something directly related to the
achievement of our selfish ambitions, our attainment of material possessions, power,
social status, or pleasure. However, those goals never satisfy in the long run once obtained.
There is always an unquenchable thirst for more and different. Only God satisfies permanently.

Jesus summarized all commandments in 2:
--You shall love the Lord your God with all your mind,
with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength.
--You shall love your neighbor as yourself.
